I got sick of looking at my faded CF instrument surrounds and decided to try to refinish them. I sanded them down with 400 grit sand paper and started applying coat after coat with Rustoleum Crystal clear enamel in a can.
There is definitely a technique to get it right. Too light of spray and it gets a matted look. Too heavy and it will run. After about 6 or eight coats I resanded all the defects again and went for the final coat or three.
It isn't perfect looking off the bike but once you mount them on the bike it, looks perfect. The whole project cost me $6.00 and the look almost completes my restoration project.
An 18 year old at a gas station asked me if it was new. Not quite, 10 years old and 27,000 miles.
I got my new CF keyguard from Bestem today. it is perfect, very well made. Now I just have to figure out how to glue the rubber gasket to it without making a mess.
