Jim,
How long ago was the service? May need belts, if more than a couple of years I'd change 'em, particularly if it's been sitting and not being ridden.
Don't know how you could say it "looked like it" had been serviced. Maybe very clean oil and a shiny filter? You're halfway to a service anyway and most 2V Ducs have less valve clearance change after 6-8K miles, so that is probably not a huge issue. I'd recommend buying LT Snyder's 2V book. Huge knowledge, and well-written. After reading it, you may decide to be adventurous and check the valve clearances yourself. Checking only requires a good set of angled feeler gauges and something to push the closer shim down with. Adjusting is another thing, but many on this list do it and have no problem. I've been doing Duc valves for about 12 years, so it's second nature now, except for my 748R, which has tiny access covers to two valves at a time.
Assuming your '99 has a 3-phase charging system, you've found one with the only real advantage of any year over another. I've been told all '99 model year bikes have this, but have seen two now that did not, so reserve judgment on that. To my knowledge, all ST2 models are otherwise pretty much identical. You'll want a headlight assembly (otherwise known as the Second Sun) from Ducati Designs. This will allow after-dark riding, which otherwise is very dangerous. DD and others make a sophisticated LED taillight assembly, which eliminates the single-point-of-failure single bulb that it comes with. Rearsets with adjustability are available from Cycle Cat and Desmotimes. Beyond that, the choice is yours. There are innumerable goodies, mostly for pride, though a small number have functionality. Fork valves, light wheels, all sorts of things are out there. I should know - I've "found" far too many.
Price sounds about $1K below typical market value, so it's all good...

Howdy,
I'm jim and new to the group.
I have searched the archives and would still like some input on this, pleez!
I have the opportunity to buy a '99 ST2 for 2500.00 with 23k miles, no service records
but current owner claims previous owner did the 20k service, and says it "looks"
like it was done(?)
What should I look for/look out for on this particular year model?
What years are considered best for ST2's and why?
Best/necessary mods?
I'm 6'4 and know someone makes aftermarket controls to fit the bike to me, who?
Thanks for any help, Jim.
