Sounds like a good procedure, but not, I think, appropriate for the piece that I assume Ian needs to repair, which is a metal tongue poking out through a slot. You can see the remains of one in the ebay pic.

Failing all else Ian, send it to me and I'll fabricate summat using my arcane clockmaking skills. I take it you don't have the knob end of the piece?
