Three issues with cam belts: Age, mileage and too much non-use. Most people say 2 years/12,000 miles. I go 3 years with mine, but they get a lot of checking and tightening. The other issue is that Ducs have pretty small cam-belt pulleys and if your bike sits a lot, they "take a set" and are more likely to fail. That's anecdotal, but I heard it from a very experienced Duc mechanic whose opinion I value. Saw a guy with 9-year-old belts awhile back. They were essentially being held together by Kevlar strands between chunks of separated belt material. Most people aren't that lucky and you will have major engine repairs to make if one fails.

I know the factory hae recommended 5 year intervals for changing cam belts but if you don't accumulate lots of mileage (other bikes to ride), does anyone have opinions on how long belts are okay? On ars, it's just mileage - based.
Thanks!
