I had a Garmin nuvi 1290 on my SV, in a waterproof case which I riveted a RAM ball mount to. Also, a Tomtom XXL is currently mounted to my BMW R1100RTP.
For what it's worth, the Tomtom units are much, much more "hackable" than the Garmin; if you have average technical skills and minimal respect for copyright, you can easily hack the unit to use the Rider UI, update maps, etc. The Tomtom UI is much better than the garmin as well.
On the other hand, I think that the garmin units do a better job of navigating, compared to Tomtom units of similar vintage. Top-tier garmins that support multi-point routing will also let you share GPX route maps from a SD card (rather than using a computer as an intermediate step), which is a worthwhile feature to have.
Regards,
Marco
