If you've got a 'smartphone', all you need is to buy the appropriate
application. That way you've got one less box of electronics to fit
in your pocket or lose. I've got TomTom on my iPhone and it works
a treat. I have a RAM ball in place of one of the handlebar bolts
and generic mounting with sprung holders, so that it will carry
an iPhone in a rubber case. I have tried a waterproof case, but
in practice a small polythene bag wrapped tightly over the 'phone,
with the mouth pointing down is all you need as long as you've got
at least a bikini fairing. Use an elastic band to bunch the mouth
of the bag around the lead.

Another tip: I've recently made a little darn pattern on the
first finger tips of my riding gloves using 'conductive thread'*.
Its a yarn made from thread and silver wire. Now I can cancel the
irritating messages that obscure the screen mid journey without
stopping and taking a glove off. For non bike use I have some
fleecy gloves that have some kind of metallic ink printed on the
fingertips. It may be that you could just paint the tips of riding
gloves with conductive paint. I think that car parts stores sell
it for repairing cheapo rear window heating strip[s.
