Mike,
It may be worth the drive if you are planning on two up trips. Here in the US the ST series came with the panniers. I have not had mine off since buying the bike in 2005. Usually I get half of one and my wife gets the other 1 1/2. It's my understanding that the panniers did not come standard on bikes outside of the US. Even though it is 600 miles, how available are they if you decide to pass? Will you be able to find another set easily? Remember, the ST was discontinued in 2007 and if you want panniers, there may not be other opportunities.

Thanks to you all for all the good advice re. the ST2 panniers, they are still available. Now the decision is do I feel like a 600+ mile drive to pick them up from Sydney, then return, if it was a ride I would jump at it. The ones at 'Proitalia' sure look fine but the postage to Oz would be the killer I'd reckon. Thanks again.
Mike, 'STralia.

Givi took over manufacture of the panniers in 2002, I believe, and Nonfango went out of business in 2006.
However, the Givi bags continue to use the Nonfango mounting pattern; switching to Givi monokey (which is about 3" deeper, and 2" wider) would cause the bag to interfere with the exhaust. (Not to mention that it would mess up Ducati's supply chain).
The only difference is the top mounting point, which is inserted into the latch. Givi's locking mechanism uses a locking groove on top (facing the latch); Nonfango's locking mechanism uses one on the bottom (facing down, away from the latch). This can be unbolted from the rack assembly, rotated 180 degrees, and bolted back in place.
Good luck with the auction; you can also find ST bags on the buy/sell ST list, or occasionally on ducati.ms.
Regards,
Marco
