Hey all, I just wanted to share a recent experience with all of you. It may make you think twice about your helmet selections; I know it has me. (BTW, SNELL does NOT approve modular helmets, unless something has changed recently)
A week ago I was on a nice ride with a good friend of mine. He always wears all the gear all the time, and never complains about the cost or inconvinence. He had just purchased a new Schuberth modular helmet a few months ago. Not sure which one, but it was one of their best modular helmets; around $800 US dollars or so.
We were going at a leisurely pace and not pushing it too hard. He had the face flipped up and was enjoying the breeze. While in a turn, he hooked up with gravel and instead of low siding the bike, his reaction was to pick it up in the turn and try to adjust his lines to avoid the gravel. Didn't happen and he ended up crashing into a tree. (This post is not intended as a discussion for what to do in a particular situation)
Because his whole face shield was up, he sustained severe facial trama. His face slammed into the dash of the bike. He broke almost every bone in his face; lost sight in one eye, and has limited vision in the other. This could have been prevented if he was not wearing a modular helmet. (or if it was down)
I know a lot of people love to ride with the wind in their face; some people like to smoke while they ride; and others just don't like wearing a full face helmet, or any helmet. Please consider my friends situation when you are choosing your equipment. I don't blame Shuberth for their product, I am sure it is amazing. However, it does not protect your face at all if it is up; or strapped to the side of your bike :)
