Sorry to read this about your friend, Nate. Sounds painful.
An open modular should yield about the same face protection as an open-faced helmet. We've all used them, and they still sell those. We each make your own choices about protection. Bad shit happens.
Thanx for the post.

He had just purchased a new Schuberth modular helmet a few months ago. Not sure which one, but it was one of their best modular helmets; around $800 US dollars or so.

While in a turn, he hooked up with gravel and instead of low siding the bike, his reaction was to pick it up in the turn and try to adjust his lines to avoid the gravel. Didn't happen and he ended up crashing into a tree. (This post is not intended as a discussion for what to do in a particular situation)

He broke almost every bone in his face; lost sight in one eye, and has limited vision in the other. This could have been prevented if he was not wearing a modular helmet. (or if it was down)

Please consider my friends situation when you are choosing your equipment. I don't blame Shuberth for their product, I am sure it is amazing. However, it does not protect your face at all if it is up; or strapped to the side of your bike :)
