| > Has anyone here heard recently from Ben Blout, one of our longtime LiSTers who lives > with his ST-owning lady Marit in Boston? Alive, and well! Thank you for the concern, and I am very sorry for the long delay in replying to recent emails; I was swamped last week getting ready for a weekend trip, and was behind in reading my emails. Marit and I are both fine. A few years ago, we watched the marathon from the approximate location of one of the bombs, which is eerie for me to consider. Some random thoughts, if you are curious: One thing that is perhaps under-reported is that the marathon is a *really* big event in the state; it is a state holiday. The town we live in is bisected by the route, and you can't drive from the north half to the south half for about nine hours marathon day. Nobody complains. I have many fond memories of handing out water to the runners every year with my mother. She had four gasoline containers (never used for gasoline) that we would fill with water each year. We then drove to the course, and handed out cups of water to the runners. A friend and his sister were within 10 feet of one of the bombs, he was waiting for his daughter to finish. His sister had (successful) surgery for shrapnel injuries, and will be fine except for facial and abdominal scarring. He was uninjured, but did see some horrendous things. The singing of the national anthem at the first sporting event after the bombings has become a real touchstone for the city. Brief coverage and a video is here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/17/national-anthem-bruins-fans-boston_n_3104964.html -Ben |
