I'm not sure that I have actually done this with the ST, but I have with the Alazzurra.
I am assuming that the bike is on the center stand. I would not do this if you are using a rear stand. There would be too much weight on the exhaust system. The point that I would choose is where the exhaust pipe sweeps down under the engine. I use a piece of wood to protect the exhaust.
CAUTION!!! The triangle formed between the jack and the legs of the stand is too small for stability. If you are lifting the bike like this, you need to lift the front high enough that the rear wheel comes in good solid contact with the ground. That provides a much more stable platform for working.
Another thought is to pull the back end down with tie downs to hold the rear wheel down and the front end up. Again, the idea is to force the rear wheel into good, solid contact with the floor.
Best way is still to hang the bike from the ceiling. That would be my preference in this case.
All this reminds me that I need to grease my steering head bearings as well.
I hope this helps.

Can you expand on "under the front exhast pipe" ? I am not sure where to place the jack.
A sissors jack under the front exhaust pipe, with the bike on the
center stand, or hang it from the ceiling.
