I installed an aftermarket R/R (can't remember the model number, though) in my 98 ST2. I ended up mounting it inside the airbox and running the wires through the snorkel holes. I also have a multi-colour LED on the dash. It's green above a certain voltage, then it goes to amber, then red, then finally blinking red as the voltage goes lower and lower. I also replaced the alternator wiring at the same time while I was at it. No problems so far.
