Under the left-hand fairing, where the coolant pipes go into the horizontal cylinder, that's the sensor for the temperature gauge. The sensor for the ECU is located where the coolant pipes go into the vertical cylinder.
In addition to the ECU, the rear (vertical cylinder) sensor also controls the cooling fan. So if the sensor is failing, it can keep the fan from turning on at the appropriate temperature (or at all).
