I also found 15/44 to be optimal gearing for my ST2. I had 14/42 for a while after deciding that 15/42 was too high. The 15/44 felt exactly right at all speeds.
I also had a chain stretch unevenly. It still looked brand new, but once I knew that it had uneven tension I replaced it as soon as possible. I've never gotten 18,000 miles from a chain.
