Hi Lew had a similar issue with my 98 model bike the light has its own circuit inside the reg unlike a car it doesn’t need to illuminate for the Alternator to work

Very odd, I did have a bulb in the socket which I replaced with a new one but have no idea where the lead for the socket goes. I should have tested the circuit with a test light while it was exposed to be sure. What an airhead I'm(senior moment).
On the plus side I cleaned up the tach connector and dialectic greased it and my tach now reads steady. It appears the voltmeter has bit the dust.

First let say I was saddened by the news of Teds' passing, my thoughts and prayers go to his family and all who knew him.
That said I seem to have a gremlin lurking on my 2000 ST4...I have a volt meter added to the ignition so I can track the charging and it has started to give erratic readings after warming up. Everything seems to be working properly ie; lights remain steady, starter spins normally.
My question involves the stock ignition light(red on the console). I cannot ever remember it lighting up. Does it only light if there is a problem? Please enlighten me with your thoughts.
