One thing to consider is using speaker powered custom ear plugs will kill two birds with one stone, ear protection and excellent sound.

Subject: [DucatiST] Another intercom thread
Hi Ray,
I can not give you feed-back on wireless. With my wife we are using very basic wired intercom of booster http://www.booster-motor.nl/ I can not find info on the web about it but I suppose similar products perform similarly. We are generally happy with our intercom. The main limitations are that with speed over 60 km/h it is very difficult to hear what the other says and over 80 km/h you can not even recognize if the other is trying to say anything at all. There is an input for mp3 player or a GSM but we found this not useful at all.
Despite this limitations we are very happy with the opportunity to talk when riding on a much more affordable prize ($90 for the set paid at a reseller in Bulgaria). You should also be aware that our helmets are not the quietest on the market and with better helmets it is possible that the communication will be better.
Wish you luck with the choice and share your feedback :-)
Rosen
