You are right, your bike system will actually be at about 14.2 volts
when you are riding. The adapter is probably right about 12 V. If you
do try and install it you should have a fuse inline.
Most electronics that can take 12V have an adapter kit and those have
a fuse and any needed voltage limiting.
Depending on the value of your widget buying the 12V adapter might be
the cheaper/easier way to go.
