I tried the pile of wood under the engine solution, and the bike tends to come off the center stand. So I went back to the jack stands and the pipe with a rag on it.
I loosened all the bolts with the bike on the wheels, so not to load that pipe too much, and now the forks and shock are off, ready to go see Stig.
Nick,
I like you solution, but I'm doing the valve adjustment and I'm afraid that the bike could rock forward or backwards.
Maybe a base under your structure would stop it from rocking.
