Re: [DucatiST] Desmo Times Fairing Modification Brackets - pre 2004 STx

Hi Marty,

I'm in the middle of that modification right now. I got part way through it and then had to head back out on a rig to work. I'm back now but my back has been giving me fits so little is being done. So far I've trimmed the tabs off the fairing mid section, the front tab and the rear tab. What you might do on the cutting of the tabs is to use a drill as a "radius" maker at the junction of the two cuts that you make on each tab. This will eliminate a potential stress riser in the panel and look more professional in appearance. I looked for a touch-up bottle of yellow paint to dress up the cuts but there isn't anything near the proper yellow that I could find so far. If you have a silver or a red bike, I don't think you'll have any problems matching the color.

I did a little bit of fitting and it looks like the 19mm dzus fittings will do but I think what you may have to do is to squeeze the "bend" of the female receptacle so that it fits closer to the stainless steel band. I think that should do you. I had to get a long handled channel lock pliers to get enough leverage to squeeze the bend but don't over do it! A vise might be a better way to get a controlled squeeze.

I have one more thing to do on the bike while I have the fairing off and then I'll be putting it back on with the modifications. I'm putting in an override switch for the radiator fan and I hope I'll have that done today.

When all is done, I'll let everybody know how the modification went. I also have an unopened fairing modification kit for sale if anyone is interested. It turned out that in all the stuff I got with the purchase of the bike there was a kit already so I've used that kit. I had already ordered the kit from DesmoTimes when I found the stuff in the boxes.

Cheers...Hopper

Subject: [DucatiST] Desmo Times Fairing Modification Brackets - pre 2004 STx

Has anybody here installed the Desmo Times Fairing Modification Brackets which allows the removal of the fairing lowers without having to remove the main upper fairing? I am having a difficult time getting the 19mm Dzus fasteners to reach and engage, so I thought I would try 21mm length Dzus. Also, it looks like there is an additional part of the front part of the fairing to be trimmed which is not shown in the instructions, in order to get the side fairing to more easily slide in behind the uppers. I've only been able to find bits and pieces of info in the web that fully describes the complete installation. I'd really appreciate if any of you guys had any input or could share how they like this modification.

Marty
