Santorum criticizes Obama shift on gay marriage
By MIKE GLOVER / Fen 24, 2011 / (AP)

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum stepped up his criticism Thursday of President Barack Obama's shift on same-sex marriage policy, and said some of his potential Republican presidential rivals are avoiding the issue.

Santorum said he was the only potential Republican candidate to travel to Iowa in 2008 to campaign for the effort to oust three Supreme Court justices because of their role in striking down a state law defining marriage as being between one man and one woman.

"I think it shows there are some people willing to stand up and fight for the family and others to use the comment of one potential candidate, call a truce on these things," Santorum said. "A truce in this case means ceding ground to the other side."

Santorum spoke during a taping of Iowa Public Television's "Iowa Press" program airing this weekend. He is considering a bid for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination and Thursday's swing was his 10th through Iowa since the election, laying the groundwork for the state's leadoff precinct caucuses.

President Barack Obama ordered his administration Wednesday to stop defending the constitutionality of a federal law that bans recognition of gay marriage.

Santorum dismissed the suggestions that opposing gay marriage doesn't work well with younger voters, and isn't high on the list of motivating factors for voters overall.

"I don't think any of you would accuse me of looking at the polls when deciding which issues to fight for," he said.

Santorum said the issue of marriage will be crucial in Iowa's leadoff precinct caucuses, which are overwhelmingly dominated by religious and social conservatives. He says those conservatives want Republican candidates to deal with emotional social issues, including marriage.

The former senator is far less known than many of his potential rivals, and likely would need a strong showing in Iowa's caucuses to avoid being forced from the race. He said voters in the state already have demonstrated their passion on the issue.

"All I can say is I have spoken loudly and will continue to speak loudly," Santorum said. "If others choose not to, then I think they will have to take the pluses and minuses of not doing something."

He reserved his sharpest criticism for Obama.

"What president Obama has done is in a two-year period of time gone from finding the bill perfectly fine and constitutional to somehow finding it unconstitutional," Santorum said. "I think it's driven by politics."
"Every gay and lesbian person who has been lucky enough to survive the turmoil of growing up is a survivor. Survivors always have an obligation to those who will face the same challenges."
