Last night when I removed the nut on the rear stock bolt to verify the size, I discovered the nut was barely tight enough to stay on. Now, this nut is a self-locking and would not back off by itself, so apparently the bolt is stretching. What's alarming about this, is the fact that I had torqued it about 6 months or so ago while doing some routine maintenance. No telling how long until it would snap. This bike has only 17k+ miles on it.
The process of enlarging the frame and cases doesn't bother me. I think the benefits will outweigh the risks. I will go slowly and carefully and keep the group informed of my progress. The bit will be here by Friday and hopefully I'll get it done over the weekend.
I did likewise, the idea of drilling the cases out didn't seem like a good idea. That area has seen a bit of stress over the years and by removing material from the area sounds simple enough it didn't seem like the correct way to do this. If the engine was remove and drilled properly that my be the way to go, but to take a drill bit and just start hacking away at my frame and motor just seemed wrong.
Of course I judge this based on some of my previous mistakes. LOL.
YMMV.
