Ray,
Just one man's experience: I have an ST4s built 7/01, purchased 10/01, put in service 4/02. It now has 55K miles. It has never needed a rocker or a shim for that matter. No indication of a bearing problem but that can happen suddenly (like in the middle of the Nevada desert). I have had 3 ECUs in the bike and carry a spare on trips. I replaced a temp sensor last fall. I follow "the Book" on maintenance. Twice I've had a fuel line in the tank pop off causing great inconvenience but I blame my own work (poor choice of fuel line) for that.
I don't do track days and couldn't say that I ride the bike hard. I've always used Mobil 1 (changed every 3k miles) and premium fuel.
Most of my riding is done at altitude ( I live at 8,300 feet) and that may stress the engine less. I get a crazy 50 to 55 mpg. Your mileage may vary.
