Re: [DucatiST] Re: determining model year of a ST2

From what I`ve understood and read, both the ST4 and ST4S had the flaking rocker issue, which is one of the reasons my first Duc was an ST2. (Love it by the way). Certain model years of the ST4S were prone to main bearing/crank issues but if you drive it hard enough, the ST4 main bearings can fail. Not sure if anyone can verify but it was described to me this way. The company making the bearings has certain tolerances to fall within, if they did they went into the 916, if they fell just outside the tolerances, they went into the ST4 knowing the ST wouldn`t (shouldn`t?) get used as hard. Also, doing my internet surfing, I came across a website which talks about the preload on the main crank bearings when assembling the cases. After the cases were split, parts repaired/replaced, and the cases shimmed to the light end of the preload limit, the engine appeared to run smoother, and rev more freely. Perhaps Ducati had a little too much bearing preload in certain years/models?

What rocker issue? What mainbearing issue? 26K miles now on mine with no replacements of either, and precious few adjustments of shims needed. I guess it depends how you ride and maintain them.
