 It's not the size of the wiring so much as the number and type of connectors in the loom. They all develop losses which add up the more connections there are. The only way to get a true reading is by going directly back to the battery. But that shuts the idiot light out of the circuit. A VDO voltmeter and a fused direct feed (from the regulator) back to the battery is the only way to really know what is going on with the charging circuit.
 
 With the 1 volt drop on the switch when the bike is at 14.2 V the ignition would be at 13.2 so that's why the bike still runs and everything works. But it would all work better if the system was all getting the 14.2 V.
