Bruce, you've opened a can of worms worse than disCUSSions on oil choices, tire choices, etc...Also will depend on what kind of leak and what caused the leak too....I've had the proverbial nails and screws and glass but I have also had, lug screws, re-mesh, safety razor saftey edge, the short end of an allen wrench, what looked like an old fint arrow head, but broken up, ...ya get the picture. Rips and tears, sidewall damage, replace the tire. Normal punctures.... ...what I have done through the years is to pull the tire, boot it (put a patch over the hole on the inside) after good cleaning and roughening up of the surface and then remount the tire. Never had an issue yet. The worse thing is you have a flat again. While on the road, I have used the proprietary "stringy" plugs and the regular plugs to no ill affect until I can pop the tire and boot it. If the tire is getting "long in tooth", I'll just go with the regular repairs and then replace the tire when it is ready to be replaced. Newer tires..boot it.
