I remember the Noddy bikes - so quiet you hardly heard them even on
the typically deserted streets of London in the 1950s. The LE was a
semi enclosed bike, with a crude monocoque body. It was a water cooled,
shaft drive, flat twin and very quiet. They were painted grey and had a
hand lever for gear selection. I think it was 150cc (why google, when
my head is probably as accurate:). I used to lust after it's perkier
brother, the Velocette Valiant which was an air cooled 200cc flat twin
with foot change. The last time I saw one, it was being piloted through
Mile End traffic ca. 1990.
