Re: [DucatiST] Re: ExactFit Timing belts

Based on all I've heard about the tensile strength of belts as opposed to steel, I can't help but think that is the "spin" they are putting on their decision to deal with the perception of expensive belt maintenance by switching to chains. What about rotational mass and acceleration? What would be heavier/rob more power? Chain and gear driven cams, or a slightly wider belt to deal with the added valve size driven cams?  If it was about engineering excellence, then they would have also narrowed the v from 90*  for packaging/weigh distribution, and also gotten rid of the desmos, which have outlasted their purposes of avoiding valve float  by decades in the name of pedigree. Why not just have a model of a new Ducati that's a "clean break" from Ducati's trilogy of technology, ie 90* L-twin, trellis frame, and desmodromics, and more like a Japanese bike like BMW did with their s1000rr? But I guess they need to do things slowly in order to not alienate the loyal customer base client, while attracting younger buyers that don't know shit from shinola when it comes to anything more than, "how fast does it go?"  If sales volume is what they want more than anything else, they're on the right path.

I just read an article about the new 1199 Panigale in CycleWorld magazine. It said that Ducati had to stop using belts because "the limits of the belt cam drive had been reached". Apparently it was a bit much to slam the larger valved open and closed at beyond 11,000 rpms.

The article also said that the only things they had to keep with the totally new design was the 90 degree V-angle and desmodromic valve actuation. You should read it (January 2012 CycleWorld magazine). It was quite informative.
