An alternative is to test a few iPhone, Ipod units against a purpose built device to confirm that they are within a reasonable spec (who knows, maybe the work fine).
That was the gist of my comment about tolerances.
I learned a long time ago that you have to test the test gear in order to be sure you are getting somewhere.
Fluke (and many other instrument companies) now offer certified versions of all their instruments (for a higher price).
It took me a long time to find a clamp on DC current meter that had an 80 amp setting so that the normal tolerances they offer would allow for reasonable chance of an accurate reading at 56 amps.
Most are in the 200-400 DC amp range and with the tolerances you could be off by 10+ amps and never know it.
