Many of the US ones have also been killed off by the big variety stores, as well.  The remaining ones are either geographically separated from the big guys or belong to families who don't put massive profits first on their list.

The British ones have suffered at the hands of big DIY chains. There are
still a few good ones like Gills in Oxford where you can buy a handful of
nails or copper washers loose, not in overpriced blister packs.
