Lowe's, Home Depot and Builders Square (now defunct I think) really put the pressure on the local home owned hardware stores. The last one in our area closed it's doors just this year...but part of that was the owners retiring. It was a neat store to wander around in!

The British ones have suffered at the hands of big DIY chains. There are
still a few good ones like Gills in Oxford where you can buy a handful of
nails or copper washers loose, not in overpriced blister packs.
