So, it was indeed a broken wire. Right where it is crimped to the front
harness (bottom) part of the connector.
I thought that the entire connector was molded around the wires, but
it turns out that the bottom part of the connector consists of a hard
plastic bit and then a vinyl boot over it. I unbolted the bottom part
of the connector from the frame and was able to "peel back" the boot
and there I found the culprit.
I was able to push the pin out of the connector and solder a new
length of wire of equivalent gauge to the pin and get it back into the
connector. Then I crimped the new piece of wire to the original wire.
And, lo, let there be light and there was light.
Before I button everything back up, I'm going to diagram the connector
and post it to the document repository so the next poor bastard
doesn't have to go though this...
