Thanks for all the feedback, I've decided it would be wise to be spooked! I've talked to my dealer (Snells, Alton, well regarded in the UK) and ordered a new master cylinder (thanks for the heads up Doug), and they'll also look over the ABS and check for fault codes etc. I'll also have a close look at the ABS sensor and check the clearances - I guess it could be having a speed resolution issue. One other thing I've noticed is that on the sidestand while warming up the speedo sometimes indicates up to 2mph, so there might be an issue there too.
Thanks again for the advice, I'll keep you posted on progress.
