You don't even need to buy a GPS application; google maps (which is free) will cache map tiles in advance, so you can keep on using it when in areas of limited phone/data coverage.
That said, I've never had a 100% acceptable smartphone GPS solution. For the most part, the screen's too dim (although I've never used a shade, which I do with a "standard" GPS); more recent Android phones have excellent screens, but overheat when stuck in a closed & unvented waterproof case. Never an iPhone, though, maybe it's the way to go.
