Bill,
Just out of curiosity, what front sprocket are you running?
I have a 2002 ST2. Last year, I started having issues with clunking noise
coming out of the rear end. I stopped several times to check it out and
didn't find anything. I did find (gasp!) that lubing the chain seemed to
minimise the noises. It turns out that after 15,000 km, my chain is fried.
It almost won't bend on its own.
It is, however, a problem of my own making. When I was doing 2000 km a year,
I had gotten used to servicing the chain when I got around to it. When I got
the ST and started doing 2000 km in a weekend, I still serviced the chain
when I felt like it. Turns out, even with a fancy O-ring chain, that is just
not good enough.
As Jerry says, see if you can work out the kink. If not, you are looking at
a replacement.
PS I was running a 14 tooth front, I switched back to a 15/44 combination
with the new chain. Haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

Subject: [DucatiST] Chain
I have adjusted and serviced my chain till my fingers are permanently grease
stained, but with no improvement. The chain has the proper tension except at
one point. At this point the chain becomes very tight and one link actually
lifts off the rear sprocket and makes a clicking noise when it pops back
onto the rear sprocket. Am I incorrectly adjusting the chain, or do I need a
new chain?
Thanks for the help, Bill (1999 ST2)
