Some remarks on your storage scenario

1) Remove battery from bike is for sure one of the good things. Storage above freezing point is a plus.

2) I would NEVER get the liquids out of a battery in use. I've always been adviced to just keep the liquid at level.
Some periodic charging to keep the battery from loosing all charge because of 'self-discharge': a battery will loose charge even when not in use.

3) A battery without liquid can not be 'short circuited'.
The liquid is necessary for the battery to function, without liquid (and for sure when cleaned and dried) you should have no battery function (zero volt), and also no hydrogen buildup (because the hydrogen comes directly from the liquid.
