If we make the big assumption that your starter does not have an intermittent fault, i.e. that every time you use a jump lead from battery +ve to starter post the starter works then you may have a corroded cable between the battery +ve and the solenoid.

A way to prove this would be to use your jump leads (1) between the battery +ve and the solenoid and (2) between the second solenoid post and the starter post, then start the bike normally. Assuming the jump leads have a good connection this should prove 2 things: the original leads are suspect and the solenoid works.

I just fixed a mate's 900SL; tested the battery under load & it was A1; I started by changing a visibly corroded lead, then the solenoid (although it clicked it did not pass current, but shunting the posts started it, which excluded the cabling and connections). I took the 'old' solenoid apart and could not find a fault at all - no corrosion, pitting... It remains a mystery, but the bike starts every time.
